Nel 2007 il Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino ha fatto una grande retrospettiva delle opere di Herzog, per cui ho curato tutta la parte fotografica: mi sono rivisto quindi una quantità di materiali che mi hanno fatto rivivere le emozioni che avevo provato vedendo alcuni suoi film. Ho quindi costruito un ritratto, anzi un ritratto multiplo in cui un bassorilievo di lui vecchio è posato sul fondo di un vulcano ormai quietato, come in una antica caldera; ma fluttuante, sovrapposta e allineata vi è un’immagine di quando era nel pieno fermento creativo, puro spirito mobile e permeabile. Intorno, brani di sue poesie, sceneggiature, libri, lettere, tutto inciso nella dura materia grezza; ed una ghirlanda di fotografie di amici, attori, film, come farfalle leggere a contornare una ferrea volontà.

The National Cinema Museum of Turin organized an impressive retrospective of Herzog’s works. I was responsible of photography and therefore able to go over several movies I had already seen. Needless to say they struck me the way they had done once. I therefore decided to work at a portrait, a multiple portrait: at the bottom of an already extint volcano, as in an old “caldera”, one of his images, floating, aligned and juxtaposed. The image goes back to his most creative, productive, effervescent period. All around passages from his poems, screenplays, books, letters, the whole of it engraved in the hard rough matter and a garland of photographs of friends, actors, movies, like light butterflies surrounding an iron will.
